A gift set still shows five available, but the last mug has sold separately. The next customer buys a set you cannot complete. Now your team has to arrange a replacement or refund while finding every other listing that uses the same mug.

To keep Shopify bundle inventory in sync, connect the bundle SKU to its component SKUs through a stock rule. LedgerLeaf Pro lets you define that relationship inside Shopify admin. For a set containing one of each item, its Bundle (min) calculation keeps the parent quantity aligned with the component that can make the fewest complete sets.

Why updating the mug is not enough

An ordinary Shopify product with its own SKU has its own quantity. Giving a gift set a name and a SKU does not tell Shopify that selling a mug should also reduce the set’s availability. Vanilla Shopify SKU fields leave that relationship undefined.

A spreadsheet can calculate five sets correctly and still leave the storefront offering yesterday’s quantity. Every standalone sale, stocktake, return, or delivery creates another update someone must remember. The weakness is the manual handoff between a correct calculation and the quantity customers can buy.

Shopify’s native bundle structure calculates availability from components. Here, we are connecting an existing parent SKU and component SKUs through LedgerLeaf’s inventory rules. Those rules make the relationship visible and manageable alongside other linked stock in your catalog.

Connect one tea-and-mug set in LedgerLeaf

Use a real set containing one tea tin and one mug. Keep a distinct SKU for the set and for each component.

Item SKU Available units
Tea tin TEA-EARL-100 12
Green mug MUG-GRN-01 5
Tea and mug gift set GIFT-TEA-01 Calculated by the rule

Open LedgerLeaf Pro’s Inventory workspace. Use the SKU filter to find the products and check that the codes identify the intended variants. Missing or accidental duplicate SKUs make the connection harder to review. Confirm that component inventory is tracked and that your out-of-stock settings match what you intend to sell.

Create a Bundle SKU rule connecting parent GIFT-TEA-01 to TEA-EARL-100 and MUG-GRN-01. Under How to calculate stock, choose Bundle (min). Give the rule a readable name such as Tea and green mug set.

The calculation matters. Min uses the lowest component stock value, so the parent should show 5, not 12 or 17. Any available (max) would use the highest value. Exact sync would match the changed SKU’s stock. Neither expresses the availability of this one-of-each set when tea and mug quantities differ.

You select the relationship and calculation in the app rather than maintaining a spreadsheet formula and copying its answer into the listing. The LedgerLeaf Inventory workspace keeps products and rules together inside Shopify admin, with no separate account to manage.

Follow the rule through a stock change

Check the rule against these successive quantities before extending it to other sets.

Stock event Tea tins Mugs Expected gift sets
Starting stock 12 5 5
One tea tin sells separately 11 5 5
One mug sells separately 11 4 4
Six mugs arrive 11 10 10
Stocktake corrects tea to eight 8 10 8

The tea sale leaves five complete sets. The mug sale reduces availability to four, and the delivery raises it to ten. After the stocktake, tea becomes the limiting item at eight. The rule follows whichever component runs out first, without your team deciding which parent quantity to correct each time.

If the parent stays at five after the mug falls to four, review the selected SKUs, calculation, and rule status in LedgerLeaf. Check the component quantities at the location being reviewed. Repeat the check through the order and restocking workflows your store uses, including a bundle order and any returned items put back into stock.

Leafy’s Tip

Use uneven quantities for your first check. If both components start at five, the wrong calculation can look correct. Twelve tea tins and five mugs make the difference clear.

Get the stock rule without an expensive extra subscription

NASP Connected Inventory charges US$9.99 per month for its inventory-focused tool. That higher price buys a narrower role in your daily work. LedgerLeaf Pro costs US$5.90 per month and includes bundle and linked-SKU rules alongside inventory snapshots, payout reports, and VAT/OSS reports. If you also prepare bookkeeping records, one subscription supports both jobs. Prices were checked on October 7, 2026.

For this gift set, the immediate benefit is simple. A component stock change carries through a defined rule, reducing manual corrections and the risk of accepting an order you cannot complete.
