Redirecting an international visitor on Shopify starts with one decision: are you sending them to a market you serve, or away from a storefront you do not want them to enter?

Use Shopify Markets for the first job. Use ShieldLeaf for the second. Mixing them together is how merchants end up with an impressive-looking redirect that sends the wrong person to the wrong place—or around in a loop.

Leafy’s Quick Answer

Turn on Shopify’s country/region redirection when the visitor should receive your localized market experience. When a selected country should not browse this storefront but has a genuinely useful alternative, use ShieldLeaf to redirect that country to a regional store, distributor, or availability page.

Choose the redirect job first

What should happen? Use
Show a country you serve the right currency, language, products, domain, or subfolder Shopify Markets automatic redirection
Let the visitor choose a different supported market or language Your theme’s country and language selectors
Keep a selected country outside this storefront and send it to a better destination A ShieldLeaf country rule in redirect mode

This distinction matters because localization and storefront access are not the same control. Markets adapts the shopping experience for customers you want to serve. ShieldLeaf gives an unwanted or separately handled country an intentional route at the storefront boundary.

Route served countries with Shopify Markets

Shopify’s current automatic redirection guidance says to go to Online Store → Preferences, activate the Country/region setting under Automatic redirection, and save.

What happens next depends on your market setup:

  • with a dedicated domain, subdomain, or subfolder, Shopify redirects the visitor to that market’s URL;
  • with a shared domain, Shopify adjusts the experience for the resolved market, such as its currency and language; and
  • if you publish multiple languages, language redirection can use the visitor’s browser preference.

Before switching this on, confirm that the destination market is active and actually ready: products are available, pricing and currency are right, translations are published, and checkout supports the country.

Keep country and language selectors visible too. Shopify notes in its localization documentation that IP-based location is not always accurate, especially for travelers, VPN users, corporate networks, and some mobile connections. A selector gives a wrongly matched customer a way out.

There is also an EU limitation worth checking: visitors in the EU are not automatically redirected between localized EU country-code domains such as .de and .fr. Shopify recommends a country or region recommendation in that situation rather than silently forcing the move.

Redirect a selected country with ShieldLeaf

Now take the other case: a visitor reaches a Shopify storefront that is not meant for their country, but you do have somewhere more useful to send them. That is the redirect job ShieldLeaf is built to make deliberate.

  1. Choose the country you want ShieldLeaf to handle.
  2. Set the blocked-visitor experience to redirect rather than a blocked-access page.
  3. Enter the regional storefront, authorized distributor, or factual availability-page URL.
  4. Preview the complete experience before turning protection on.
  5. Test the destination on desktop and mobile, then activate the country rule.

Normal setup uses Shopify’s app-embed model, so no theme-code edit is required. The Free plan supports one active country with redirect or blocked-page mode and preview; Pro adds unlimited countries, country groups and presets, and blocked-visit activity logs.

This is where ShieldLeaf becomes more than a generic redirect: the visitor’s country is the rule, and the useful destination is the outcome. Without that storefront decision, a simple URL redirect cannot tell which regional traffic you meant to handle.

Leafy’s Watch-Out

Open the destination in a private window before launch. It should load without a login, make sense for that country, work on mobile, and never send the visitor back to the protected storefront.

Use one destination that earns the redirect

A redirect is helpful only when the next page is better than the current one. Prefer a regional store with the right catalog and delivery options, an authorized distributor that serves the country, or a clear availability page. Do not send everyone to a generic homepage just to avoid showing a block.

The memorable rule is simple: Markets sends supported customers to the right shopping experience. ShieldLeaf sends a selected country to the right place outside this storefront. Decide which job you need, test one complete route, and keep a manual way back for customers whose location was detected incorrectly.
